NHGRI sets aside $3.9 million for genomics ELSI centers
February 2009
SHARING OPTIONS:

BETHESDA, Md.—The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has set aside $3.9 million in funding for fiscal year 2010 for the creation of cross-disciplinary centers to study the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) issues related to genomics technologies. Grants will be as much as $750,000 per year for five years to fund up to three specialized centers and exploratory centers, plus as much as $150,000 per year for three years for three exploratory research projects.

The new centers would encourage collaborations between diverse groups, make results of their work available to policy makers, and help train the next generation of ELSI researchers. Ideally, research agendas will follow themes in keeping with NHGRI's large-scale programs, such as the Cancer Genome Atlas, the Human Microbiome Project, the 1000 Genomes Project, the Genes and Environment Initiative and medical sequencing projects.
