India’s BHU to launch stem cell center

UTTAR PRADESH, India—Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has announced plans to establish a Stem Cell Research and Bone Marrow Transplantation Centre of Uttar Pradesh. The new center will enable stem cell and bone marrow transplants, with 10 beds for patients undergoing transplants. Construction is expected to cost approximately $3.6 million, with roughly $7.1 million worth of equipment. According to Prof. T. M. Mohapatra, director of the Institute of Medical Sciences at BHU, equipment procurement is underway, as is construction. The facility will be ready for use in the next year and a half.
 
"BHU will have a sophisticated center … meant for interdisciplinary research for development of new technology in stem cells," Prof. Lalji Singh, vice chancellor at BHU, said in a press release.
