Stanford launches Ph.D. program in stem cell biology
June 2011
SHARING OPTIONS:

PALO ALTO, Calif.—The faculty senate at Stanford University recently voted to approve the creation of a Ph.D. program in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. As part of the Stanford Medical School, the program will encourage a focus on multidisciplinary coursework. Theo Palmer, associate professor of neurosurgery and co-director of the new program, says students were frustrated that "the existing Ph.D. programs were outstanding within their narrow disciplines, but none provided the cross-disciplinary training required for a successful career in regenerative medicine." University officials and professors hope the program will prepare students in the basic biology research regarding stem cell biology and help them to move out of the lab and towards medical practice, in addition to attracting new students and furthering the field of stem cell biology. The program will start accepting applications in fall 2011, and the first class of three to six students will begin in 2012.
