What to expect from CPhI Worldwide this fall

BARCELONA, Spain—To get a flavor for what will be going on at the CPhI Worldwide meeting in October in Spain, we did a short Q&A with the organizers. Here’s what they had to say about the event.

DDNews: What is different, new or expanded this year compared to last year?

CPhI: This year is the inaugural visit of our CPhI Worldwide to the colorful city of Barcelona. The entire pharma community will gather to showcase their services, latest research and debate key industry issues, converging with leading decision-makers and innovators across the industry. Distinguished pharma executives from all over the world will gather at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via on the fourth through sixth of October, as this year’s edition welcomes over 37,000 expected attendees from over 150 countries and 2,500 exhibitors.

This year, Finished Dosage Formulation (FDF) will launch as a new, co-located event—a dedicated platform for every aspect of the finished dosage supply chain—attracting deeper collaborations and new audiences. FDF will gather exhibitors from Big Pharma and CMOs to out-licensing and dossier specialists, end product distributors, generic pharma companies and home markets. Since its introduction at CPhI Worldwide in 2011, the Finished Formulation zone has grown rapidly to become the third largest segment of the overall event, totaling 11,000 square meters in 2015. Developing this zone into a co-located event is a natural progression for the CPhI brand. Looking ahead, the FDF is forecast to grow extremely quickly, and by giving Finished Dosage Formulation its own voice, its own story, a vital platform emerges for new audiences.

The revamped CPhI Pharma Awards also returns to the show for its 13th year, with four more categories than in 2015, bestowing an impressive 12 awards to celebrate the best pharma achievements. The expanded awards have been created to give wider recognition to all the great advances and technologies coming out of the pharma industry. The winners will be announced live during the prestigious CPhI Pharma Awards Gala, on the first evening of CPhI Worldwide 2016 in Barcelona, with over 250 VIP guests in attendance.

DDNews: What are some of the key focus areas and/or speakers you'd like to highlight?

CPhI: On Oct. 3, the day prior to CPhI Worldwide, the 8th Annual CPhI Pre-Connect Congress will take place. The platform brings together experts and thought leaders from the entire pharmaceutical industry to provide insights on the major developments in the industry, with innovation, contract services and patient centricity taking center stage this year. Providing six tracks across three different theatres and delivered by more than 40 senior level speakers, the Pre-Connect Congress will cover the full spectrum of the pharma value chain, across contract services, drug design and delivery, pharma ingredients, biologics and biosimilars, finished dosages and generics and pharma packaging. It’s an opportunity for visitors to come pre-armed to the global exhibition with the latest trends, saving months of costly research and providing essential insights that will sustain business growth over the next year.

Beyond the exhibition, the Pharma Forum is CPhI’s go-to space for all pharmaceutical professionals looking to explore specialist areas and new business opportunities, as well as sourcing non-biased information on trends, innovations, developments and the latest regulatory insights—all in one location.

DDNews: Why should people in the drug discovery/R&D space attend this event, or other pharma/biotech decision-makers for that matter, who are readers of our magazine?

CPhI: Increasingly, all of the pharmaceutical supply chain is now attending at CPhI Worldview, and co-located event ICSE is a veritable “who’s who” of contract development and manufacturing organizations, many of which are increasingly exploring innovative risk-sharing models with virtual biotech companies. This is becoming particularly important for the new wave of drug targets entering clinical trials, as these targets are often very poorly bioavailable and soluble, meaning that a development partner's technologies are essential in helping bring these compounds through clinical trials.

This year is also particularly relevant to the biotech industry as CPhI is taking place in Barcelona, a rapidly emerging hub of biotech and biopharm innovation. This year will also see BioPh as the dedicated zone for biopharmaceutical development and services, bringing together suppliers and buyer from the biotech industry.

DDNews: What new content might you plan for next year, if anything (or if you can talk about it)?

CPhI: Next year will see the launch of CPhI North America in May, bringing together the world’s largest global pharma exhibition and the largest pharma economy. The United States accounts for nearly one-third of the world’s pharma economy and half its predicted growth, making it the dominant driver of research and innovation globally.

This event will be co-located with FDF, ICSE, Innopack and InformEx to bring the most comprehensive look at the pharma supply chain. It is the first time that professionals from all over North America will gather to network and hold a multinational conversation on the present-day challenges, opportunities, and breakthroughs in pharma.

About the event

CPhI Worldwide, together with co-located events ICSE, InnoPack, P-MEC and FDF, hosts more than 36,000 visiting pharma professionals over three days. More than 2,500 exhibitors from over 150 countries gather at the event to network and take advantage of more than 100 industry seminars. Every sector of the pharmaceutical market is represented under one roof, and attending CPhI Worldwide is said to be a cost-effective way to establish new business relationships, meet with global partners and stay updated on the latest industry trends.

The exhibition showcases cover the whole spectrum of pharmaceutical manufacturing and ingredients sourcing, offering products and services that cover the entire supply chain.
  • CPhI Worldwide: for pharmaceutical ingredients
  • ICSE: for outsourcing solution providers, contract manufacturing and services
  • InnoPack: for pharmaceutical packaging and drug delivery systems
  • P-MEC: for pharmaceutical machinery, technology and equipment
  • Finished Dosage Formulation: for every aspect of the finished dosage supply chain

Live Pharma Connect

New for 2016, CPhI introduces Live Pharma Connect, a match-and-meet service for CPhI Worldwide 2016.

A free online tool, provided by goMed2Med, Live Pharma Connect is open to visitors and exhibitors allowing both parties to make prearranged pharma-specific, mutually beneficial meetings during the event. The system is reportedly easy to use, and is supported by an automatic matching function, eliminating the need to manually search databases to find the right business connections.

Face-to-face meetings can take place on-site, either at the exhibitor’s stand or by using the scheduling tool for meetings at the Live Pharma Connect stand itself.

Awards at CPhI Worldwide

CPhI Pharma Awards was launched by CPhI in 2004 to provide recognition to pharmaceutical companies that turn inspiration into innovation, and the event celebrates thinkers and creators breaking new ground in industry and strongly advocates companies that are committed to driving the industry forward.
With this year’s edition, CPhI Pharma Awards will give recognition in 15 categories, including the CEO of the Year and the Corporate Social Responsibility.

The winners will be announced at the prestigious CPhI Pharma Awards Gala, taking place on the first evening of CPhI Worldwide 2016 in Barcelona with attendance of over 250 guests.
